Using DFSORT and ICETOOL

Why take this course?

After completing this course, you will be able to
  • Write JCL and DFSORT control statements to sort, copy, and merge records in
Sequential data sets, VSAM data sets, Members of PDS or PDSE, HFS Files
  • Create symbolic name files to use in DFSORT and ICETOOL control statements
  • Write JCL and DFSORT and ICETOOL control statements that enable you to
Work with subsets of files, build new records, reformat existing records
Add, remove, and reorder fields, convert data type of fields, and edit content
Do arithmetic calculations, inserting sequence numbers
Replace values using lookup pairs in specific locations or in any location
Extract fixed length values from variable length fields (parse)
Output multiple files in a single pass, including XML, and HTML
Reports with up to three levels of control breaks
Work with dates and times in a wide variety of formats, including SMF, TOD, and ETOD
Convert between fixed length record files and variable length record files
Join records and fields from two files and process the resulting file set

Students who complete this course will be able to code JCL and DFSORT and ICETOOL control statements to utilize the power of these utilties. This includes using these utilities instead of tedious programming languages to create reports (with up to three levels of control breaks), XML files, and HTML files from flat files, VSAM files, members of PDS or PDSE or files in the Hierarchical File System (HFS).

Audience
Experienced programmers and analysts who need a solid, in-depth exploration of DFSORT and ICETOOL capabilities.
Prerequisites
A working understanding of JCL.

Major topics covered

  • DFSORT control statements: INCLUDE, OMIT, INREC, OUTREC, SORT, OUTFIL, OPTION, SUM, RECORD, MERGE, JOINKEYS, JOIN, REFORMAT
